Hey hey, August. Your resident camp girl, here.

Aaaaah, August. The end of summer, the start of school. Well - used to be.

August used to represent a heavy-hitting month of summer camp, back to school, and an *insane* amount of errands in between. Target runs. Doctor’s appointments. Office Depot trips. The time of year when everyone has the exact. same. to-do list.

Though a fast-paced hot mess, I always looked forward to the month. Gave our house a sense of purpose again. Growing up, I spent my last two weeks of summer each year at Camp Mystic - the actual best place on earth. Down in the Texas Hill Country on the Guadalupe River, situated in the greenest stretch and populated with the most genuine of folk. Mystic is pretty much solely responsible for the rose-colored glasses I like to view the world through. I can rattle off the three Mystic ideals at the drop of a hat, I can educate on the camp’s 90-year history thanks to the term trivia night, and I can shout my tribe’s endless chants and songs that roll off the tongue too naturally, thanks to 13 glorious years at camp. They teach you to be the absolute best of yourself and offer it daily to everyone around you. Every year, camp sent me back home rested, inspired, grounded, reset and refueled to take on the world, er, school year.

Call me a camp nerd all you will - I’ll take it proudly!

So now it’s no wonder that August gives me all the feels of self reflection and goal-setting. An abnormal time for most, the most natural time for me.

Last year, it hit me that my August would no longer be filled with the annual scramble of bidding a bittersweet farewell to Summer, and waving a big hello to Fall. I had graduated and started my first full time job, I was entering Year Two with Madeleine Calligraphy (!!!), and overall adjusting to the working life - an adjustment that would WHIP me into shape all too quickly.

THIS year, its hit me that my August is actually filled with a lot of the same...

  • Bidding farewell to Summer means winding down the absolutely CRAZY travel schedule I’ve been juggling. As fabulous as it’s been, my lil body is TIIIRED.

  • Waving hello to Fall means actually having time to, oh I don’t know, SEE my friends and reconnect with my people! The folks that make life that much easier because they put up with my incessant need to travel and do and see and never sleep, they’re still here when I finally come up for air to hear all about it.

And let’s not forget to define my new reason to look forward to August each year: M Calligraphy’s birthday! An annual reason to celebrate all I’ve worked on, reflect on where I want to be headed, and plan for the next steps to get there.

And now you see why August is the month that puts me back on track feeling rested, inspired, grounded, reset and refueled to take on the world. More to come on what’s coming next, goals and all as I start gearing up for Year Three!
